You know that moment when you hop into bed after dressing it with freshly laundred linens? Pure bliss, right? I truly believe the bedroom is the most important spot in the home...it's a place for reflection and nourishment for both your body and mind. Keeping this space clean, comfortable and relaxing is crucial to how you start and end your days. The 'getting-ready-for-bed' process in my house is quite extensive...I spend a good half-hour before bed making sure the room is clutter-free, cool and all electronics are turned off. Shutting down the home for sleep encourages your own body to ease into a restful slumber that will help you recouperate for the next day.
Styling your bed with the most exhilirating linens will help prompt you to keep this important area clean and inviting. So let's get started on the essentials....
Change your bed linens by the season. You change out your wardrobe as the warmer months creep in, and you should do the same for your bed. Look for crisp, airy cotton-based sheets for summer, like the Restoration Hardware Washed Vintage Bedding Collection and cozy, plush jersey or flannel sheets for those chilly winter months, like the Organic Flannel Sheets from Gaiam.
Heavenly Blankets & Duvet Covers. Don't just think 'style' when you're adding the finishing touches to your bed. Ease and comfort is everything! Find a duvet cover or comforter that is easy to remove, wash or launder, with breathable fabrics. When selecting a down comforter, consider the season you'll be using it for as well as the type of insallation, such as light-weight goose feather down or hyper-allergenic alterantive down. Add layers to your bed with addtiional plush blankets during the winter months to snuggle up in and that add a pop of color to your bed! Having these 'extras' will make for a more pleasurable snooze.
Pillows and Pillows Galore! I am all about pillows...especially decorative pillows. I put them everywhere in my home...but above anything else, bedroom pillows are by far the most important. I've been known to go through bed and bath stores and lay down in the middle of the aisles just to try every pillow they offer. I've been lucky with Serena and Lily's Boudoir Down Pillow, however, everyone is different and needs to find the level of comfort and support that is suitable to their own body.
Here's to more restful nights!
